Job Summary

The Department of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a brand new position of Communications Manager. This position will provide oversight for communications needs of the Department as well as its divisions and centers. The Communications Manager will plan, execute, and manage comprehensive communications initiatives, campaigns, and strategies in conjunction with the Office of Strategic Communications. The role will assess and evaluate communications needs based on organizational and communications priorities, develop communications plans and calendars, and deploy/implement strategies and tactics to achieve desired outcomes. This includes implementing final design of collateral materials and responsibilities for internal and external content. The position will direct website content management within the Department’s 14 divisions and centers and will manage the Department’s internal communications for the Chairman’s Office, including intranet, email, blogs, etc.

The Communications Manager position is a unique opportunity to shape a communications function in the Department while focusing on audiences’ access to, understanding of, and engagement with important school initiatives. The ideal candidate will be eager to tackle the challenges of planning and developing content that helps build brand recognition and generates buzz about events and developments taking place in the department. This position will coordinate closely and frequently with executives, faculty, and staff regularly to understand priorities and vision, and create content that connect back to the goals of the Department and School. Critical to the effectiveness of this position will be the individual's ability to write and communicate in an institutional voice, tone and manner. The role will leverage produced content through a variety of channels, including print, digital, speeches and presentations. Success in this position also will require strong project management skills, and an ability to work collaboratively and constructively with a wide range of people at various levels within the IU School of Medicine organization.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business administration, or related field and three years of experience in marketing/communications, or public relations.

Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills for print, video, and online media. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the campus and with external constituencies. Familiarity with metrics performance tracking systems, including Google Analytics. Excellent time management to meet multiple priorities and deadlines and ability to set and achieve measurable goals and outcomes. Fiscally responsible and knowledgeable in budget preparation. Ability to coordinate/direct the work of others. Advanced skills with Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and active knowledge of existing and emerging digital and social media resources. Strong editorial and writing skills. Strong public relations skills, ability to select and produce communications in various forms, understanding website design and maintenance, familiar with social media outlets.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in marketing, communications, business administration, or related field. Experience in the field of marketing/communications. Leadership experience in marketing, advertising or communications with demonstrated success, in a non-profit, higher education, health care, association, or agency setting. In-depth experience working with online content management (CMS) and customer relations management (CRM) systems. Experience working with web content management systems-particularly Cascade, Drupal, Weebly, and other web markup.

Working Conditions / Demands

The person in this position must be able to perform essential functions of the job with or without an accommodation. May involve remaining stationary for long periods of time as well as moving about campus. The position uses typical office equipment such as computer, phone, fax and copy machine and some audio visual equipment. Incumbent must be self-motivated, diplomatic, highly flexible due to the nature of the job. Incumbent must be able to adapt to a continuously changing environment.
