Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to support clinical activities and to assist students and faculty in providing dental care for patients in the Graduate Endodontic Department for the School of Dentistry.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with patient care to include setting up instruments, supplies and materials for necessary procedures.
  • Sit chair-side to pass instruments and support direct patient care as indicated by the procedure.
  • Comply with infection control procedures by stripping, disinfecting and bagging unit after patient care has been provided.
  • Enter findings and procedure information in patient chart as directed by faculty and students. Review chart entries to ensure proper information has been entered.
  • Request instruments and supplies from other departments as directed by coordinator.
  • Mix materials for use by faculty and students. Inventory and restock supplies (all) and instruments. Other duties associated with clinic operations.

This position is posted at a TE05 level but may be filled at another level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Required Qualifications section below for the qualifications listed for each level.

Required Qualifications

TE05 Dental Assistant Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting training program or two years of dental assisting experience.

Radiology license.

Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities.

TE05 Dental Assistant II Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting training program or two years of dental assisting experience, and six months of experience in an educational environment.

Radiology license.

Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities.

TE06 Dental Assistant Specialist Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting training program or two years of dental assisting experience, and one year of experience in an Endodontic dental office.

Radiology license.

Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an Endodontic dental office.

Working Conditions / Demands

Must be able to remain in a stationary position at dental unit that will include movement to pass instruments and supplies. May need to assist patient with getting into and out of dental chair. Frequently move supplies and instruments to dental units up to 50 pounds. Must be able to identify, coordinate, and utilize all dental instruments needed for procedures. The person in this position frequently communicates with patients and faculty about treatment and other follow up. Regular attendance is required. Up-to-date immunizations and annual TB test required.

Work Location

We're located on the IUPUI campus in downtown Indianapolis, in close proximity to the IU School of Medicine, the IU School of Nursing, the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, several major hospitals, and the Roudebush VA Medical Center.
