Job Summary

Serve as an expanded functions dental assistant to provide independent and expert dental procedures as well as provide clinical assistance to dentists in more complex procedural cases.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Perform expanded dental assistant functions and demonstrate correct procedures to students. Take impressions and bite registrations. Fit preliminary crowns for adjustments, create custom temporary restorations and place temporary restorative material in teeth. Make and fabricate temporary crown and adjust and cement. Place and remove matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations. Place resin and amalgam restorations. Finish and polish restorations and adjust patient bite.

- Sit chair side to pass instruments and support direct patient care as indicated by procedure. Instruct students on functions of expanded dental assistants and how to use their skills in private practice.

- Demonstrate proper infection control procedures in set up. Confirm that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organize them for procedures and/or surgery.

- Instruct students on patient interaction including reviewing dental history, addressing concerns, suggesting treatments and discussing importance of follow up appointments.

- Take, develop and mount x-rays. Instruct students on taking x-rays.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and completion of a dental assisting training program with one year of expanded dental assisting experience; OR high school diploma or GED and two years of dental assisting experience with one year of expanded dental assisting experience.

Indiana x-ray license and certificate in Expanded Functions Dental Assisting.

Knowledge of dentistry and placement of restorative materials and techniques. Dental assisting skills in general and specialty dental areas to include: taking and developing x-rays, expanded functions in restorative dentistry, infection control procedures, and usage of dental materials. Excellent communication skills. Strong active listening and critical thinking skills. Strong service orientation and ability to effectively interact with a diverse population of patients.

Working Conditions / Demands

Extensive time in a stationary position at dental unit and twisting to pass instruments and supplies. Ability to manuever around the clinic to get supplies from cabinets as needed. Carrying supplies and instruments to dental units. A 25 pound weight limit for pushing and 50 pound weight limit for lifting. Ability to work in confined areas around dental units and in dirty and clean instrument rooms. Ability to operate dental equipment/instruments for patient procedures. Mixing dental materials.

Regular attendance is required. Annual TB and up to date immunizations required.
