Job Summary

Officers are assigned at the direction of supervision to patrol, on foot or in vehicle, designated areas on and adjacent to university-owned property. Enforces Federal and State statutes as well as the policies of Indiana University; protects citizen's rights, property and persons; and identifies and prevents criminal and delinquent behavior. Maintains order and facilitates the safe, expeditious movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Assists citizens; resolves conflict; and maintains order and deters crime. Provides information to students, faculty and staff regarding University policy and procedures; investigates complaints and accidents; documents information; and maintains records. Collects evidence; questions individuals; and drafts and enters reports, accidents, and citations in databases as required.

Issues citations and/or arrests law violators and prepares and serves civil processes. Responds quickly to medical assistance calls, accidents, fires, disturbances, and breaches of law; administers aid as a first responder; provides security for buildings and property of Indiana University; and provides security and law enforcement presence for special events, including commencement, athletic events, visiting dignitaries, and cultural events.

This position is posted at a LE05 level but may be filled at another level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Requirements Section below for the qualifications listed for each level.

NOTE: This position is also open to those candidates that are currently police officers certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.

Required Qualifications

Patrol Officer Entry/Probationary Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certification eligible.

Patrol Officer Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and one year of law enforcement experience. Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certified.

Patrol Officer - Senior Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and three years of law enforcement experience; or Associate degree and five years of law enforcement experience; or High school diploma or GED and seven years prior law enforcement experience. One specialty (FTO, Instructor, Ldr Acad, Det). No performance issues.

Patrol Officer - Master Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and ten years of law enforcement experience; or Associate degree and thirteen years of law enforcement experience; or High school diploma or GED and fifteen years prior law enforcement experience. One specialty (FTO, Instructor, Ldr Acad, Det). No performance issues.

All Levels Requirements:

Must be 21 years of age or older.

Completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy or ability to enroll and successfully complete*.

Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Meet the Entry standards of physical fitness testing (ILEA), physical examination, psychological evaluation, drug screening, interview, and background investigation. Ability to communicate and perform duties effectively and in a professional manner. Understanding of instructions and ability to perform tasks efficiently. Ability to read, write and speak English fluently. Basic knowledge of computers and word processing, email, and database software systems. Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by Indiana State Law and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB). Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, and others. Current firearms qualification.

Note: Candidates that must attend and successfully complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Basic Training course for 15 weeks must do so within one year of the hiring date. This requires an initial commute to a training site for one week, as well as weekly stays at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana for the remaining 14 weeks. The candidate will be paid while attending the Law Enforcement Academy.

Fitness Assessment will be conducted on February 21st. Location and time will be sent via email closer to the testing date.

Applicants who meet the minimum position qualifications will receive additional details, including exact time and location, through email about the physical fitness assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification.

Working Conditions / Demands

Periodic overtime is required and includes athletic and other special event assignments.
