Location: This position is located at our St Augustine's Home in Indianapolis, IN.

Job Title : LPN or RN

Responsible To : Director of Nursing and/or Little Sister unit supervisor

Position Description : Direct nursing activities, including preparation of nursing care plans and the care of all residents on a designated unit, working in close collaboration with the unit supervisor. Together they direct the activities of the unit staff.

Position Type : Full Time

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the total nursing care of the residents during tour of duty. Render nursing care in conformance with recognized techniques and procedures. Interpret policies and procedures to staff including medical, residents, and the public.
  • Admit and help orient new residents to the unit and the Home.
  • Recognize and interpret symptoms, report residents’ condition and assist or institute remedial measures for adverse developments.
  • Administer and chart medications noting reactions; administer and record treatments. Assist in diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care including all pertinent information on the shift report and in the nurses’ notes.
  • Complete monthly summaries; maintain narcotic records and other records as required. File incident reports in the event of an accident or an unusual occurrence and notify the Director of Nursing. Ensure that all nursing knowledge concerning residents is kept confidential.
  • Assist in the orientation, training and supervision of nursing service personnel, aiding them to acquire needed skills in observing and caring for the residents’ personal needs. Implement good team spirit. Assist staff with nursing problems, reporting same to the unit supervisor and, if necessary, the DON.
  • Supervise hygiene activities of residents. Promote safety awareness with the residents, helping them to keep their rooms in good order.
  • Encourage and motivate residents to participate in activities.
  • Understand and cooperate with restorative nursing, social rehabilitation and activity programs and coordinate these programs with unit activities.
  • Give emergency treatment when required. Notify DON, unit supervisor and physician of emergencies. Carry out physicians’ orders, conveying the orders to the DON or her delegate.
  • Provide special care for the residents requiring professional and RN nursing skills, such as, but not limited to, I.V. therapy, nasogastric or gastrostomy feedings.
  • Summon the Little Sister supervisor, who will contact the Chaplain for anyone whose condition has become serious, so that the resident may receive spiritual care and assistance.
  • If the resident is to be transferred to another facility, arrange for the transfer and complete required forms.
  • Requisition medical supplies and equipment to meet unit needs. See that equipment is in good working order.
  • Direct care of equipment and appliances; report any problems to unit supervisor. Be aware of safety factors and maintain a safe environment. Be thoroughly acquainted with the Home’s fire and evacuation procedure and direct staff in absence of the supervisor.
  • Record pertinent data and relay it to the next shift before ending your tour of duty.
  • Perform any other duties necessary to fulfill the primary responsibilities of the position, as well as those assigned by your supervisor or management personnel.
